A Visitor from Peterborough via Anduze
|

Frances from NH, staying in the nearby town of Anduze,
came to Uzès...and the town was decked out in spring flowers!

Frances and Sandra make the rounds at the Saturday
market...

...joining the crowds for a taste of the region.
|

Sunday is a great day to visit a château...
so we were off to Tarascon, a town with a fortified castle overlooking the
Rhône river. |
|

The arches, the doorways, the tapestries,
the gremlins....
|
King René's castle is enormous, with a collection of
17th century Flemish tapestries depicting Hannibal's escapades...Hannibal
and his elephants are reputed to have crossed the Rhone at Tarascon in the
2nd century BC...
|
The castle epitomizes medieval fortress construction. Here is the view
from the parapet, across the Rhône to the enemy castle at Beaucaire...
|

The mistral was really blowing, especially on top, but
we held on so we could take in the views from all sides! |
|

|
The castle's turrets overlook the interior garden, where
these lilies seem particularly appropriate during Easter week.
Tarascon's castle is a marvel and well worth a visit,
even in the wind.
Thanks to Frances for inspiring me to visit this
magnificent castle on the Rhône! |
