Visitors' Gallery
Down South in France
A tour of the region...
Day 1 from Uzès starts with breakfast on the terrace
with Joe...

Heading south from Uzès, we followed the Rhone river
which was very high from spring rains up north (above right). We'd seen the
effects in Paris as well where boat tours were banned from the Seine because of high
water.

We came upon a 13th century chapel, Chapelle Saint-Gabrièle, and
stopped for a photo.

Next stop, an old mill near Fontvielle made famous by French writer
Alphonse Daudet, whose chronicles of life in Provence are legendary.

Once again, just by the side of the road, we found traces of an old
Roman aqueduct and mill. We stopped to explore and take in the two
thousand year old ruins.

Another two-century old ruin, a Roman funerary monument
at Glanum, near Saint-Rémy-de- Provence.
Driving through les Alpilles, a beautiful region of limestone mountains
and home to Les Baux, a 13th century fortress high on a hill...

A perfect photo op for Karen, a shot of Nan & Peggy
taking pictures of Les Baux...notice the vineyards and olive groves in the
background. This region is famous for its high quality olive oil...some
say better than the best Italian oils.

Lunch is one of our primary objectives and we've found
our spot...le Bistrot du Paradou.

Starting off with a Kir Royale, then a three course meal
and all the wine you can drink, makes for a long lunch...

Jean-Louis, owner of the Bistrot, rewarded us with signed posters of
the restaurant, a gift to treasure almost as much as the memory of the
meal!

Even our waiter wanted to get in on the show!
But the show must go on, so we're off to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in
search of pottery...
...and we found pottery, plenty of it, all of it
beautiful and Provençal. Best news...they ship!

In the French tradition, the day ended with a multi-course dinner at
La Bégude Saint Pierre, a charming inn and restaurant just outside of
Uzès.
